Vision
SISONKE means ‚togetherness‘ in Zulu language. SISONKE stands for creative exchange, synergy and dialogue between South Africa and Europe, the promotion of social equity and artistic freedom. SISONKE initiates an exchange based on reciprocity and sustainability, detecting creative potential and assembling energies.
SISONKE is based on mutual respect, appreciation and the openness to learn from ‚the other‘.
At the heart of this project is Imfundiso, a training initiative in South Africa that focuses on the cultivation of young talent from historically disadvantaged communities in high quality jewellery design. Founded in 2001 by Isaac Nkwe, Imfundiso was honoured by Nelson Mandela for its action to alleviate poverty and celebrated at the 2006 Oscar Gala where ‚Tsotsi‘ actress Terry Pheto received her Oscar wearing a gold necklace designed and produced at the Imfundiso Soweto Jewellery School. Imfundiso runs currently eight jewellery design schools in the country.
Aims
Mutual generation of cross continental exchange in reciprocal inspiration, fostering intercultural communication and collaborative art practice.

- Promotion of a better understanding between South Africa and Europe as an initiative against stereotypes and prefabricated notions of cultural identity

Starting point
The 21st Century is marked by rapid changes of perspectives and the evolvement of new centres on a global level. The opening to the “other” has been declared as a principle of action. International attention is more and more directed to art production of the new centres such as South Africa. However, international representation processes of contemporary art production remain closed circuits branded by inequality of access relating to geographical provenance. Cross continental exchanges are more often then not still biased by stereotypes and prefabricated notions of cultural identity.
It is time to start communication based on something as simple as dialogue. It is time not to seek for lack or deficiencies in the other, but to detect and tap creative potential and to assemble energies. There are no global issues which stand alone.
The project SISONKE stands for a sustainable process, uniting social, sociopolitical and artistic contents.
Initiators and partners
SISONKE was developed by Imfundiso South Africa and KulturAXE Vienna, Austria, and will be realized together with the New Design University, St.Pölten, the South African Embassy in Vienna and institutional partners in South Africa, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.
KulturAXE Vienna, a culture association founded 1995, disposes over long standing experience in the direction of transnational art projects and intercultural exchange processes. Its projects encompass International Art Symposia in Central Eastern Europe, transnational exhibition projects, art summers, seminars and activities in public space. Since 1998 there has been a continuous exchange with artists and initiatives from South Africa.
Imfundiso (ISD) was founded 2001 in South Africa to transfer jewellery design and manufacturing skills to historically disadvantaged and unemployed youth. The aim is to foster creative potential of the youth, to assist them in generating income and employment opportunities and to create access to training for non-matriculants. As a contribution towards the eradication of poverty in historically disadvantaged communities, including rural areas.
New Design University (NDU), St.Pölten, Austria, was founded 2004 as an English- and German-speaking private University of the Creative Industry and offers Bachelor-, Master-, and further study programmes. The week-long New Design Festival is organized by the NDU at the Museumsquartier Vienna and takes place in March 2007 for the second time. Info: www.ndu.ac.at
Cross continental chronology
December 2005: Imfundiso South Africa and KulturAXE Vienna start with a cooperation process and the concept of a cross continental cultural project.
March 2006: The South African Embassy in Vienna becomes a cooperation partner of the newly developed project ‚Cross Continental Design Catwalk‘ (CCDC). With Machfeld Vienna, a cross continental web portal is outlined, the Cross Continental Action Platform (CCAP).
April 2006: The New Design University St. Pölten becomes a partner of the CCDC and offers the prominent location at the Museumsquartier Vienna within the frame of the New Design Festival in March 2007.
May 2006: KulturAXE and Imfundiso present the project in South Africa. The name SISONKE is born. South African institutional partners and artists are invited to join.
June 2006: SISONKE is presented at the Art Academy in Bratislava, Slovakia.
July 2006: At the 16th Art Symposium of KulturAXE in Hungary, the first mutual jewellery design workshop is realized with Imfundiso in cooperation with the New Design University St. Pölten and the Art Academy Bratislava. The South African Ambassadress in Hungary visits the workshop and proposes a CCDC presentation in Budapest.
October 2006: The CCDC is presented to the Director of the City of Johannesburg, Department of Arts, Culture and Heritage who proposes a presentation in November 2007 at the Annual Festival of Creative Industry Talents.
November – December 2006: Renowned artists and top designers from Austria confirm their participation at the CCDC. The CCAP web portal goes online: www.cca-p.net

SISONKE means ‚togetherness‘ in Zulu language and stands for a creative exchange between South Africa and Europe. The Cross Continental Design Catwalk (CCDC) is an unique jewellery and fashion design performance created by 200 designers and artists from South Africa, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia. A complex production integrating jewellery and fashion design, music, dance, visuals and poetry for an enthralling event reflecting the theme of ‚togetherness‘, directed by leading contemporary choreographers.
The jewellery pieces and outfits were produced in South Africa and Europe, by top designers and emerging talents. The CCDC was performed at the Museumsquartier in Vienna, within the frame of the New Design Festival 07 of the New Design University, St.Pölten. The SISONKE programme encompassed jewellery design exhibitions, live music acts, DJ lines and film screenings.
SISONKE was developed by KulturAXE Vienna and Imfundiso South Africa as a sustainable platform of exchange between the continents. The SISONKE CCDC was created in cooperation with Ntja-pedi Productions, Blackage Media (RSA), Inzalo Dance Company (RSA), D.ID Dance Identity (A), New Design University (A) and the South African Embassy Vienna.

Samson Mnisi is a renowned artists, music composer, producer and film director. He was a politically and socially active figure in the ANC during the apartheid era. Mnisi emerged in the post apartheid regime as a cultural organizer, artist and activist. He has launched multiple cultural endeavors in Newtown, Johannesburg and New York City including CrossPathCulture, South Africa. Samson has exhibited internationally and has extensive experience as a producer, director and organizer of major theatre, music, art and film projects including projects at Museum Africa, Lincoln Center of Performing Arts and PS1 in New York, Museum Africa and the Jobert Art Gallery in Johannesburg. He has composed music for BET, VH1 and SABC including the sound track for „The Fighting Prince,“ a Docu-Drama about Arthur Mayisela by Dumisani Phakathi recently screened on SABC 2. His art-work has been written about in numerous publications and catalogues including Liberated Voices: New Voices from a New South Africa, Trace Magazine, and Business Day to name a few.

Martin Machapa was born 1984 in Soweto. During his teenage years he joined ‚The Aim‘ which was one of the most dedicated local music groups during the eighties. Martin Machapa is not only a talented person, but a music fanatic. His voice awakes one from mere reality to the world of magnificient soul satisfaction. Machapa featured in some of South Africa’s most acclaimed legends such as Hugh Masekela and diva Sibongile Khumalo, and he performed at events such as the Afro Vibe festival and Playtime Festival. He launched his debut solo album entitled Tsatsi with a blend of African, jazz and opera sounds last year. The album is described as brilliant combinations of diverse and yet balanced sounds which are true reflection of Machapa. Those who love Jazz will enjoy an element of it and those who like pop will definitely find something to dance for while Opera lovers will share their slice as this album encompasses some operatic songs.

Gerald Schuller, born 1968 and raised in Mistelbach/Lower Austria, is one of the most versatile pianists and keyboard players in Austria as well as a renowned composer and arranger. He picked up the piano at the age of 9, six years later he attended the Vienna Conservatory, studying jazz piano with Rudi Wilfer and earning a masters degree in jazz theory under Heinz Cadek. 1988 he joined Austrias legendary rock theatre outfit „Hallucination Company“, playing keyboards and trumpet as well as arranging and composing for the band. In 1993 he left the band to become founding member of the highly successfull vocal group „The Rounder Girls“. 2003 he became a teacher at the Vienna University Of Music / Institute Of Popular Music, giving lectures on composing and arranging. He is also busy working as MD for various theatre and musical productions in the Vienna curcuit, and as a sideman for artists as diverse as Matt Dusk, Paul Capsis (who took him along to Melbourne and the Sydney Opera House for his triumphant solo performance „Boulevard Delirium“), Bill Ramsey, Sertab Erener, Harry Stojka and countless others.

Reisinger began his study of the piano as a five year-old with the Vienna Choir Boys in 1960, then progressed to the Vienna Conservatory and the High School for Music, all the while investigating the perfoming scene, as well. In 1973 he was a member of the experimental group „First Vienna Music Circus“, and thereafter of a trio with the pianist and composer Beat Furrer and guitarist Voja Brkovitc. Further collaborations with Peter Ponger, Harry Rettenbacher and Stefan Aschbock ensued. In 1979 he joined the Vienna Art Orchestra, with whom he remained as percussionist and drummer until 1989. In 1981 he became one of the founding members (along with Wolfgang Puschnig and Uli Scherer) of the ensemble „Part Of Art“. At the end of the eighties circumstances took Reisinger to France, where he built an international reputation as a member of the European Jazz Trio with Francois Couturier and Jean Paul Celea. He’s since worked with many of the world’s great jazz artists, including Enrico Rava, Joachim Kuhn, and John Abercrombie. For Jazz Fest 2007, Reisinger will prepare another edition of his „Extended Solo Drumming“ program.

Pianist Martin Reiter was born in Vienna in 1978. He studied jazz piano in Vienna, The Hague, and New York with Rob van Kreeveld, Fred Hersch and Ed Simon, among others. He has toured with jazz greats such as Matthieu Michel, Alex Deutsch, Peter Herbert, Bennie Maupin & John B. Williams, Jonathan Blake and Simone Kopmajer. In addition to jazz performance Martin Reiter is also a composer of chamber and orchestral music, children’s songs, and big band music. He released his first self-produced album, „Chez es Saada“ in Feb. 2005

SISONKE ‚togetherness‘ ladet ein zu einem differenzierten Blick auf das Leben in Afrika und auf das Leben in Europa in globaler Nachbarschaft.
Abseits gängiger Klischees, die den Mythos des ‚Anderen‘ prägen, zeigt die SISONKE Filmreihe persönliche Sichtweisen, Lebenserzählungen und intime Porträts. Subtil und eindrucksvoll zugleich sprechen sie über Nähe, Beziehung und Identität.
SISONKE ‚togetherness‘ steht für eine gedankliche Gegenposition zu einem dystopischen Phantasma dessen Realität Grenzabschottung, Lagerbildung und reglementierte Bewegung heißt. In Zeiten höchst ungleicher Möglichkeiten zu persönlicher Mobilität, wandelt die Idee SISONKE Entfernung in Nähe um. SISONKE entgegnet Xenophobien – den Angstformen vor dem Fremden – und der Gleichgültigkeit, mit der unzensurierten Einladung gegenseitigen Kennenlernens.
SISONKE ‚togetherness‘ist eine Filmreihe im Rahmen des 1. SISONKE Festivals in Wien, das von KulturAXE und Imfundiso Südafrika konzipiert wurde. Filmschaffende aus Wien, Budapest und Johannesburg wurden eingeladen die Filmreihe gemeinsam zu kuratieren. Der Auswahlprozess der Filme/Videos zielt besonders auf die Auseinandersetzung mit Konstruktionen von Identitätsbildern ab. SISONKE Film wird in Wien eröffnet. Weitere Filmreihen dazu werden 2007 auch in Budapest und Johannesburg gezeigt werden. Mit der Zeit entsteht ein SISONKE Filmarchiv.

Die Filmemacher Dumisani Phakathi, Johannesburg, Emanuel Danesch, Wien und László László Révész, Budapest, treffen jeweils die Auswahl der Filme stellvertretend für ihren persönlichen kulturellen Kontext. In Wien zeigen Dumisani Phakathi und László László Révesz auch eigene Produktionen. Jede Vorstellung präsentiert eine Auswahl von Kurzfilmen gefolgt von Dokumentar- oder Spielfilmen. Für SISONKE FILM speziell produziert wird eine Reihe von kurzen Filmsequenzen, den sogenannten ’sisonke-spots‘.

Emanuel Danesch, geboren 1976 in Innsbruck. Studium Universität für angewandte Kunst in Wien und Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien. Als „polymedialer” Künstler beschäftigen sich seine Projekte, Dokumentarfilme und Installationen mit Themen kultureller, ökonomischer und politischer Transformationen. Oft in Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Künstlern ist er in zahlreichen Ausstellungen im In- und Ausland vertreten.

Ich war fasziniert von diesem Erbe und entschied meine Brüder und Schwestern aufzusuchen… und einen Film davon zu machen.” Von Soweto nach Ladysmith und Durban, führt Dumisani Phakathi uns in diesem road movie um die Mitglieder seiner Familie zu treffen, Eltern und Kinder, die sich in großer Spontaneität äußern. Somit wird für die BewohnerInnen Berlins eine neue architektonische Qualität geschaffen.

Der in Budapest lebende Medienkünstler Csaba Nemes nutzte die Ebenen Ungarns für seinen Dokumentarfilm THE SUN OF AFRICA, dessen Aufnahmen er durch die Scheibe eines Busses schoss. Unzählige gigantische Plastik Zelte auf fast jedem Grundstück und Landstrich hatten sein Interesse geweckt. Wo immer er hinsah, fand er diese Plastikzelte – etwas kleiner als durchschnittliche Einzel-familienhäuser, aber oft mehrere Quadrat-meter Boden einnehmend. Dafür gab es eine einfache Erklärung: Die meisten Familien in Szentlorinckata verdienen ihren Lebensunterhalt mit Gemüseanbau. Eine der effizientesten Methoden für diesen Anbau stellten die Plastikzelte dar, mit ihren eigenen Wasser- und Heizsystemen. Diese Zelte begannen nun die Landschaft in eine Industrie-Landschaft umzuwandeln.

In einem unbenannten Bezirk von Johannesburg in 1970, starrt ein vergnügter neugieriger Schuljunge namens Sharky unentwegt auf ein Plakat, das die Aufführung des Burt Lancaster Films „Valdez is Coming” in einem lokalem Kino ankündigt. Sharky lebt bei seiner Großmutter nachdem seine Eltern zwangsumgesiedelt wurden unter den Gesetzen der Apartheid. Da es ihm unmöglich ist, Eintrittskarten für den Film zu kaufen, bezahlt er stattdessen den Zutritt zu den nächtlichen Aufführungen am Lagerfeuer, von seinen Freunden veranstaltet um den Film nachzuerzählen. Da aber seine Großmutter plötzlich erkrankt, versäumt er das Ende des Films. Phakathi präsentiert die Geschichte von Sharky als Allegorie zu Südafrikas Turbulenzen und Ungewissheiten.

Der Turul ist ein Fabelwesen aus dem ungarischen Mythenkreis. Der Turulvogel, der einem Adler ähnelt, soll die Ungarn nach Pannonien geführt haben. Turul-Denkmäler und Statuen befinden sich u.a. an der Freiheitsbrücke in Budapest oder im Burgpalast. In den zwanziger Jahren wurde der Turul zum Symbol der Nationalisten, als Urvater und Schutzfigur. 2005 wurde nun wieder eine Turul-Statue errichtet auf einem Platz im 12. Bezirk von Budapest. Der Film erforscht die Meinungen der Bevölkerung zum Mythos Turul und seiner Neuerscheinung im heutigen Ungarn.

Klassische Dreieck-Beziehung im Stil des Film Noir. Die Hauptfiguren dieser Liebesgeschichte sind der superreiche Mafioso, Mr. Butter, seine schöne Frau, Olga, und sein Diener oder „seine rechte Hand”, Pedro. „Die Bitterkeit und die Rache des betrogenen Ehemanns sind das Werk des Teufels, Pedro! .. Und Du sitzt mittendrin!” sagt Mr. Butter am Anfang des Films in einem Telefongespräch. Olga und Pedro müssen fliehen. Ihre surrealen Abenteuer enden in einem Autounfall. Östlich des Neusiedler Sees, im sogenannten Seewinkel, vermengen sich der Assistenzeinsatz des österreichischen Bundesheeres („Aktion Limes”) und der NATIONALpark zu einem außergewöhnlichen Spektakel. Lokale Geschichte, Biologie und die verwechselbaren Bild- und Tonzeichen der Natur- und GrenzschützerInnen in der Landschaft lassen die globale Dimension hinter dem nationalen Ritual verschwinden. „Natur” dient als unverdächtiger ideologischer Rohstoff. Die Konstruktion verrät sich an ihrem Ablaufdatum: in wenigen Jahren verschiebt die Festung EUropa die imperiale Demarkationslinie ein Stück weiter nach Osten. Hier wie dort verweist der Limes nicht auf das lokale Territorium, sondern auf Gebiete und Bevölkerungen tausende Kilometer östlich und südlich. Landschaftstableaus bilden das visuelle Ausgangsmaterial einer ethnografischen Erkundung des Grenzgebiets. Die idyllische Integrität der „freien Natur” wird mittels einer durch Zitate illustrierten Erzählung dekonstruiert. Sound und Text stellen den stereotypen Bildtypus wieder in den Kontext der politischen Realität. (wr)
§TATTSBÜRGERSCHAFT? – NATIONALITY?

Mein Diplomabschluss an der Wiener Kunstuniversität soll mir, gemeinsam mit einigen Empfehlungsschreiben etablierter Persönlichkeiten aus der Kunstbranche, dazu verhelfen, die Österreichische Staatsbürgerschaft im „beschleunigten Verfahren”, also vor Ablauf der Mindestwartezeit von zehn Jahren, zu erhalten. Wird es mir gelingen? Und wozu ist das eigentlich notwendig?
Die ökonomischen Prozesse im Zentrum von Globalisierung und EUropäischer Integration führen zur Verschiebung und Redefinition von Grenzen, zu Migrationsprozessen und werfen Fragen nationaler Identität und Bürgerschaft neu auf. Die bestehende nationalstaatliche Bürgerdefinition etwa in Österreich schließt MigrantInnen weitgehend von politischer Partizipation aus, und drängt sie zu einer Reihe von Handlungen, die sich stets an oder jenseits der Grenze der Illegalität bewegen, um ihr Bleiben zu sichern. KünstlerInnen geht es dabei noch relativ am besten: Als diplomiertes „unternehmerisches Individuum” im kreativen Sektor und nicht EU/EWR- Bürgerin in Österreich erlaubt mir der Staat Aufenthaltsrecht und Teilnahme an den örtlichen Lebensbedingungen – allerdings unter der Bedingung, dass ich „rentabel” bin. Um diesen prekären Status zu verlassen, ist das Ansuchen um Staatsbürgerschaft, das nach 10 Jahren Aufenthalt im Land möglich wird, eine pragmatische Möglichkeit. Die Überlegung ist ganz nüchtern: Eine Re-nationalisierung meiner Identität würde mir gleichberechtigte Lebenschancen als Unionstaatsbürgerin in EUropa verschaffen.
Das Video ist eine Dokumentation der behördlich geforderten Sammelns von Nachweisen, dass ich der neuen Nationalität „würdig” bin, und gleichzeitig die Abschlussarbeit für das begehrte Diplom.

„1. 1. 2006: ein neues Gesetz bricht über uns herein …” so beginnt der rund 40-minütige Fremdenrechtskrimi DIE LISTE, von und mit EHE OHNE GRENZEN. Frauen in binationalen Partnerschaften nahmen die Kamera in die Hand und richteten sie auf die Wirklichkeit eines Gesetzes, das abgesehen von Chaos bei Behörden und NGOs vor allem eine massive Verschlechterung der (arbeits- und aufenthalts-)rechtlichen wie emotionalen Situation der betroffenen binationalen Paare mit sich brachte.
Der Film präsentiert die Chronologie der Ereignisse von Jänner bis Oktober 2006 und lenkt dabei den Fokus auf ein „unmoralisches Angebot” seitens des Innenministeriums: DIE LISTE …

„Sans Papiers” ergab sich aus einer weitreichenden Recherche, die in erster Linie die Probleme einer Bevölkerungsgruppe behandelte, die aus diversen Motiven Zuflucht innerhalb der Europäischen Union (respektive Deutschland) sucht.
Ein beträchtlicher Anteil dieser Menschen lebt mit ungeklärtem Status. Sie werden als illegal bezeichnet, als Flüchtlinge, Immigranten, Asylanten. Von staatlicher Seite wurden spezialisierte Haftanstalten entwickelt, die als Auffanglager zur Vorbereitung von Deportationen dienen. Das Videomaterial umreißt Lebenssituationen und Haftbedingungen, die von Abschubhäftlingen im Abschiebe-gewahrsam Berlin-Köpenick in Interviews wiedergegeben werden. Mit einem Fokus auf teilweise widersprüchliche Verfahrensweisen mit Inhaftierten unterschiedlicher Herkunft, sollen derartige Institutionen und der offizielle Umgang mit Menschen ohne Papiere in Frage gestellt werden.

Der Wiener „Wurschtlprater” ganz aus der Sicht der dort Arbeitenden. Wie sind sie dorthin gekommen? Wie sieht ihr Arbeitsalltag aus? Wie stellen sie sich ihr weiteres Leben vor? Der Wurschtlprater hat hier mit „Wiener Idylle” nichts zu tun. Die meisten Befragten kommen aus Ex-Jugoslawien und erzählen die Geschichte ihres Alltags, von verpassten Chancen, vom Zusammenleben am Arbeitsplatz; und natürlich vom Geld, das man verdient – aber eben nicht genug davon; und sie erzählen von den Möglichkeiten innerhalb der EU und zeichnen ein Mikromodell der Lebens- und Spannungsverhältnisses einer Gesellschaft, in der Arbeitsmigration Voraussetzung und Normalität des ökonomischen Überlebens ist.

Er befragt sie, ob sie jemals in der Hauptstadt waren, ob sie sich vorstellen könnten hinzufahren, und was sie dort tun würden. Niemand der Befragten hatte je die Gelegenheit gehabt nach Budapest zu kommen. Der Film thematisiert die Kluft zwischen der Stadt- und Landbevölkerung in Ungarn, und greift damit ein Tabuthema auf.
